What Happens to My UK Pension When I Move to Singapore?

If you've spent years building up a UK pension and you're now living in Singapore, you're probably wondering what happens to it — and whether you need to do anything.

The short answer: your pension doesn't disappear when you leave the UK. But it does become more complicated. Here's what you actually need to know.

Your pension stays where it is — unless you choose otherwise

Moving abroad doesn't automatically trigger anything with your UK pension. Your existing pension pots — whether workplace defined contribution schemes, personal pensions, or older defined benefit (final salary) schemes — remain in place. The funds continue to grow (or fluctuate) based on how they're invested.

What changes is how you interact with them. You're no longer building up contributions through a UK employer, and eventually, you'll need to decide how and when to access them — potentially from abroad.

The key options for your UK pension as a Singapore expat

You broadly have three paths:

  • Leave it in the UK: Your pension remains invested in your existing scheme. At retirement age you can draw it down from Singapore — either as a lump sum (the first 25% is typically tax-free under current UK rules), a drawdown arrangement, or an annuity. This is the most common and often the most sensible default.

  • Transfer to a QROPS: A Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme allows you to move your UK pension to an overseas scheme. Singapore doesn't currently have QROPS-approved schemes, so if this is relevant to you, the transfer would typically be to a jurisdiction like Malta or Gibraltar. This route has had significant rule changes in recent years and carries an Overseas Transfer Charge of 25% in many cases — it's not something to approach without specialist advice.

  • Transfer to a SIPP (Self-Invested Personal Pension): Consolidating multiple UK pensions into a single SIPP can make sense for simplicity and control, and you can manage it from Singapore. You're still subject to UK pension rules, but you gain more flexibility over investments.

What about tax?

This is where it gets nuanced. Singapore doesn't tax foreign-sourced income for individuals, which means pension income received in Singapore from a UK pension is generally not subject to Singapore income tax — but it may well be subject to UK tax depending on your residency status and whether a double taxation agreement applies.

The UK-Singapore Double Taxation Agreement generally means you won't be taxed twice, but the specifics depend on your individual circumstances, the type of pension, and how you're drawing from it. This isn't an area to guess at.

What you should actually do

For most Singapore-based expats, the practical priorities are:

  • Track down all your UK pension pots — the UK government's pension tracing service can help if you've lost track of old workplace schemes.

  • Understand what type of pension you have — defined contribution schemes work very differently from defined benefit ones, and the options available to you differ significantly.

  • Resist pressure to transfer without proper analysis — QROPS and offshore pension transfers are a well-known area for mis-selling. If someone is pushing you hard to transfer, slow down.

  • Review beneficiary nominations — living abroad is a good prompt to make sure your pension nominations are up to date, especially given the cross-border estate complexities.

Note: UK pension rules — including tax-free lump sum rules and overseas transfer charges — have been subject to frequent change. Always verify the current position before making any decisions.

The bottom line

Your UK pension is one of your most valuable assets. Leaving the UK doesn't mean you need to do anything drastic with it — but it does mean you need to understand your options clearly, because the decisions you make (or don't make) can have a significant long-term impact.
